Sheikhupura Agriculture
Agriculture, industry and commerce are the main sector on which economy of the country relies. The major cash crops of Pakistan are cotton, wheat, rice and maize.
Rice is the second most important crop which makes economic prosperity of the growers/farmers as well as earns billions of rupees through its export for country.
Rice played a key role in the agro-based and occupied a prominent position in agricultural economy of the country. Pakistan is the 11th largest producer and 4th
largest exporter of rice. Rice accounted for 3.2% of the value added in agriculture and 0.7% of GDP in Pakistan. Two types of rice were under cultivation in Pakistan.
Basmati rice was famous in the country due to its excellent cooking quality and good marketing value at national and international levels.
This extremely fragrant rice is Pakistani’s gift to the entire world. Basmati rice is full from balance nutrients and high energy caloric food.
The main growing areas of Basmati are Districts Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Gujrat, Mandi Bahaudin and
Kasur. The name basmati means sweet smell. This rice has special features, which make it’s naturally long grain fragrant and delicious in taste.
Types of Rice cultivated & Traded in Sheikhupura:
Super Kernel Basmati Rice, Extra Long Grain 1121 Basmati, Long Grain Pk-386, Long Grain IRRI 9 Rice, Long Grain IRRI-6 Rice, Long Grain Pk-385 Basmati,
Broken Rice, and many more. Narang, which is renowned for its good-quality rice.
Major crops and fruit of district Sheikhupura are sugarcane, wheat, rice and guava. A variety of vegetables are also grown in the district.
There are 23 flour mills, 93 rice mills, 4 fruit juices, 4 solvent extraction units and 15 vegetable ghee/cooking oil units already operating in the district.
In view of the availability of various raw-materials and existing industries, there exist little additional scope for flour mills and rice husking units.
However, there exist good prospects for fructose from rice bran, rice husk briquettes, corn oil, furfural from maize cobs, fruit juice/pickles/squashes and
vegetables dehydration units.
Major crops are grown in District Sheikhupura including Rice, Wheat, Berseam, Sugar Cane and etc. Major fruits and vegetables are also grown in District Sheikhupura.
Livestock : There are 28 tanneries, one milk processing unit, one ice cream unit, 11 leather products units and 5 leather shoes units already operating in the
district. In view of the above, there exist good prospects for dairy farms, cattle/goat/sheep fattening farms, leather garments, leather products,
etc.
